IPS TRAINING COURSE OF THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2013-2014

On August 17th, 2013, the Asian International School organized a training program for primary school teachers. This was an important training program to help teachers understand how to follow the schools' regulations and improve the effectiveness of classroom management as part of the Circular 32 regarding the assessment of elementary school students as well as serving as a guide for administrative responsibilities pertaining to the school. A unique hands-on method used for teaching primary school students was introduced to teachers for teaching history and geography using audio and visual aids.

The session took place under the chairmanship of the District of Tan Binh's Education Department with the participation of the IPS' board of managers, classroom teachers, and teachers of specialized subjects.

The first symposium was held by Ms. Nguyen Minh Khanh from the District of Tan Binh's Education Department. It was called "Hands on method for teaching science to primary students". This method is considered a new feature of the education sector that is widely deployed in Vietnam, particularly in Ho Chi Minh City. The hands-on method focused on students inquiring and researching. Students are to raise questions and formulate hypotheses, conduct their own research, analyze, and discuss with their peers, and finally confirm their results using their empirical observations. This scientific approach to learning helps to promote curiosity and stimulates the students' desire and passion for science. It provides students with a natural and rich learning experience. In order to help the IPS teachers obtain a clear understanding of this method, Ms. Nguyen Minh Khanh had put together a video presentation detailing the method.

The second symposium of the training session was called "Teaching history and geography to primary school students through visual methods for the 2013-2014 school year". These methods have been introduced by the HCM Department of Education and Training at the beginning of the 2011-2012 academic school year and later applied to a number of primary schools in HCMC in 2012-2013. The visual methods for teaching history and geography help students to relive notable historical events and understand lessons in geography with confidence.

She also assisted classroom teachers and teachers of specialized subjects at IPS on how to understand and evaluate students, improving the effectiveness of teaching at IPS, and performing administrative tasks.

Following the training session, Ms. Nguyen Thi Yen, a grade 5 teacher at the IPS Cong Hoa campus had these thoughts to share: "Through this training program, I was able to learn more about other teaching methods to organize lessons for my students. They are effective ways to enable the students and promote their creativity and their own ability. My colleagues and I are attracted to and excited by these effective teaching methods. We will certainly use these newly learned methods to help our students become more motivated in studying."
