Trinh Hoang Nam – Winner of the “Cambridge English Speaking Competition 2012 – FCE Level”

Cambridge ESOL, which belongs to Cambridge University in the United Kingdom, and The Group of Asian International Education (GAIE) would like to congratulate Trinh Hoang Nam – an IPS student in class 11/6 - on winning the "Cambridge English Speaking Competition 2012" for FCE level. He will represent Vietnam against other Asian countries' representatives in the Asian Round Competition, which is scheduled in July 2012, in Cambridge, the United Kingdom.

In Vietnam, "Cambridge English Speaking Competition 2012" is for all candidates who are students at the ages from 16-22. Cambridge ESOL uses First Certificate in English examination (FCE) consisting of skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing to evaluate all candidates' English levels. They have to take 5 examinations on May 14, June 11, October 08, November 12, December 10 in Ho Chi Minh and Ha Noi city. Then the 10 best-scored candidates will be chosen to attend the national final round held in March 2012. Finally, the winner will become the Vietnamese representative to compete against 9 candidates from Japan, China, Korea, India, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Hong Kong in the final round of "the Asian Cambridge English Speaking Competition 2012", which is scheduled in July 2012.

On the evening of March 20, 2012, the final round of the "Cambridge English Speaking Competition 2012 – FCE level" was held by Cambridge ESOL at Ben Thanh Theatre, district 1, Ho Chi Minh City. The Top 10 candidates in all FCE tests during the 2011-2012 school year from provinces and cities nationwide took part in this contest, after defeating over 2000 candidates nationwide. Trinh Hoang Nam– an IPS student in class 11/6 – was one of the 9 finalists who participated in the final round of the competition.

The final round consisted of 2 parts. In the first part, the candidates would give a five-minute speech on a preselected topic set by the organization committee. In the second part, they would randomly draw topics, and have 30 minutes to prepare. After preparing, they would give a 2 minute and 30 second speech.
In the first part, Trinh Hoang Nam made a good impression and drew sympathy from the organization committee and the audience when suddenly appearing with the line "I love Vietnam" on his red T-shirt. Thanks to his self-confidence, self-motivation, attracting presentational style with abundant content, and the methodical and professional investment for PowerPoint slides, the board was absolutely persuaded by Hoang Nam. He also received a lot of praise, and enthusiastic support from the audience.

In the next part of random drawing, although having only 30 minutes to make some necessary preparation, he tried his best to grasp his topic clearly and choose the best way to show the speech as well as his ideas perfectly. Hoang Nam achieved dominance over other candidates thanks to his concise presentation as well as sharp, strong and persuasive argument, especially his smart answers concentrating on the questions, which convinced the board completely.

At the end of the competition, everybody in the hall waited for the final decision of the board anxiously. The applause was thunderous over the hall, and his teachers, friends, parents and relatives seemed to go wild with joy when Trinh Hoang Nam was named as the winner of the final round. Trinh Hoang Nam– an IPS student in class 11/6 at Cong Hoa campus – defeated all of the other candidates at that night.

Awards for the winner of this competition are a commemorative cup, a Cambridge ESOL certificate, HP laptop, a set of materials of Cambridge Press and a three-month course at PSB Singapore. Hoang Nam will continue to bring honor to the Vietnamese people and The Asian International School as well by being the Vietnamese representative to take part in the final round of "the Asian English Speaking Competition" in Cambridge, UK in July 2012.

Meeting Hoang Nam after that final round, he said in happiness and pleasure: "Achieving the first prize in the final round is my most wonderful pride and happiness. Besides my own efforts, it is thanks to all IPS teachers' enthusiasm that I can gain a very high achievement in this contest. Right when receiving the topic of this contest, the teachers has clearly disseminated its contents and regulations; I also was practiced speaking English with many foreign teachers, teaching assistants and professional managers as well, and received their suggestions on content of my speech and style of presentation. With their wholehearted guidance, I have gotten much more experience and nice ideas for my topic and presentational skill. Thank you, my teachers and school very much for your concern and facilitation so that I can achieve my current success."

In addition, he added: "In order to gain the confidence, ability of making English speech fluently, self-control in presenting and showing my own opinions, it is because I have been trained carefully in the learning process at IPS through the international English courses, extra-curricular activities and much practical experience in school-ranking English Speaking Contest 2011-2012. All have contributed to my current success."

Nam was very smart and always strived for academic excellence. From the first to eleventh grade, he has been an excellent student at IPS. His academic achievements included many admired awards: an excellent student in both the Vietnamese and English programs at The Asian International School, 2 consolation prizes for Olympic English Contest held by Department of Education and Training and for English Contest in Phu Nhuan district, a second prize for "the English Speaking Contest 2011-2012 – TOEFL level" organized by IPS, and the winner of "Cambridge English Speaking Competition 2012 – FCE level". Trinh Hoang Nam himself is the pride of his family, teachers, friends and The Asian International School as well.

To get much more success, Nam is setting his top goal to gain the best achievement as a nice gift for his parents and teachers at the final round of "the Asian English Speaking Competition" in Cambridge, UK.
At that final round night Cambridge ESOL also congratulated IPS students on having successfully defeated around 2,000 other candidates to achieve Top 100 ones who gained the highest scores in FCE level: Đinh Hoàng Kim Thịnh – class 10/4, Nguyễn Hoàng Tú – class 9/6, Trương Trần Hoàng Tuấn – class 11/7, Nguyễn Ngọc Anh Thư – class 10/4, Mã Hoàng Anh Thư and Phương Du Tâm – class 7/34. Those were honored and given certificates of satisfactory progress and awards by Cambridge ESOL as well.

When looking back the past achievements, IPS teachers and students should be proud of and confident of affirming the educational quality, teaching methods and educational environment at IPS. With the source of knowledge gained from well trained teachers as well as his self-confidence, skills, and spirit, we wish Hoang Nam to continue to gain success in "the Asian International Speaking Competition" in Cambridge, UK.
